Late Rally Lifts Oaks, Foresters Top Blues in Sunday CCL Action
Sunday’s California Collegiate League slate featured a little bit of everything, from a one-run comeback win to strong pitching performances and productive offensive showings across the league.
The Conejo Oaks outlasted the Arroyo Seco Saints in a 10-9 thriller, while the Santa Barbara Foresters earned a 6-2 road win over the San Luis Obispo Blues. Elsewhere, the Menlo Park Legends and Walnut Creek Crawdads both turned in shutout wins, the Academy Barons held off the Orange County Riptide and the Sonoma Stompers defeated the Alameda Merchants.
Conejo Oaks 10, Arroyo Seco Saints 9
The Conejo Oaks came through late to outlast the Arroyo Seco Saints, scoring twice in the ninth inning to earn a 10-9 win in a back-and-forth matchup.
Conejo opened the scoring in the first on Caden Stillwell's RBI single before Arroyo Seco answered in the bottom half with an RBI double from Zach Leite. The Oaks added two more runs in the second, but the Saints moved in front in the fourth after Leite drove in another run with a double and Canon King followed with a two-run home run.
After Conejo retook the lead in the fifth, Arroyo Seco tied the game in the sixth and later surged ahead with a four-run eighth inning. Evan Reiter delivered a two-run single before Camden Andrews added a two-run single of his own, giving the Saints a 9-8 lead.
The Oaks answered one final time in the ninth. With Conejo trailing by one, Brandon Contreras singled to bring home Zach Nagy and Tyson Reis, putting the Oaks back in front for good.
Conejo finished with 10 runs on 13 hits, while Arroyo Seco totaled nine runs on 14 hits.
Santa Barbara Foresters 6, San Luis Obispo Blues 2
The Santa Barbara Foresters picked up a 6-2 road win over the San Luis Obispo Blues, using steady middle-inning production to build and hold their lead.
After two scoreless innings, Santa Barbara broke through with two runs in the third before adding two more in the fourth. San Luis Obispo answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Foresters responded with another run in the fifth and added insurance in the eighth to keep control of the game.
Santa Barbara finished with six runs on six hits, while San Luis Obispo totaled seven hits but left several scoring chances on the table. Marcus Greis, Sawyer Farr, Brady Janusek, Wylan Nelson, Chris Newstrom and Christian Turner each recorded a hit for the Foresters.
For San Luis Obispo, Diego Murillo led the offense with a three-hit game, while CJ Moran added two hits.
Menlo Park Legends 4, San Francisco Seagulls 0
The Menlo Park Legends shut out the San Francisco Seagulls, using an early lead and steady pitching to earn a 4-0 road victory.
Menlo Park took control in the first inning after Ryder Kelly walked and Ryan Duron drove him in with an RBI triple to center field. Duron later came around to score, giving the Legends an early 2-0 advantage.
The Legends added to their lead in the fifth when Oliver Hogan grounded out to bring home Kelly, making it 3-0. Menlo Park tacked on one more run in the ninth as Aaron Louis singled to right field to score Michael Aikawa.
San Francisco finished with four hits but could not break through offensively. Menlo Park scored four runs on just three hits and took advantage of its opportunities throughout the game.
Academy Barons 3, Orange County Riptide 2
The Academy Barons held off a late push from the Orange County Riptide to earn a 3-2 road win.
Academy opened the scoring in the second inning when Antonio Lujan singled to center field, bringing home Chip Mertz for an unearned run. The Barons added two more in the fourth, as David Aguirre singled to score Nigel Buckley and Mertz, extending the lead to 3-0.
Orange County got on the board in the fifth when Dennis Fitzpatrick scored on a passed ball, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Riptide threatened again in the ninth, with Reid Montgomery singling to right field to bring home Slater Nunez and make it a one-run game.
The Barons were able to hold on from there, finishing with three runs on eight hits while playing error-free defense. Orange County totaled two runs on six hits and committed two errors.
Sonoma Stompers 5, Alameda Merchants 2
The Sonoma Stompers used a strong middle-inning push to defeat the Alameda Merchants, earning a 5-2 win.
Sonoma opened the scoring in the third inning when Misael Uriepero doubled to bring home Trent Keys. Alameda answered in the fourth, tying the game after Kai Laxa scored on a double play.
The Stompers took control in the fifth. Angel Garcia lifted a sacrifice fly to score Keys and put Sonoma back in front before Uriepero followed with a two-run home run, extending the lead to 4-1.
Sonoma added another run in the seventh on Mike Jones' RBI single, while Alameda scored once more in the eighth on Trey Johnson's RBI double. The Stompers finished with five runs on nine hits and held the Merchants to two runs on four hits.
Uriepero led the way for Sonoma, driving in three runs with an RBI double and a two-run homer.
Walnut Creek Crawdads 5, Philippines Baseball Group 0
The Walnut Creek Crawdads shut out the Philippines Baseball Group, using early scoring and strong pitching to earn a 5-0 win.
Walnut Creek pushed across one run in the first, added another in the second and tacked on a third run in the fifth. The Crawdads held the Philippines Baseball Group scoreless through the first seven innings, allowing just two hits during that stretch while working around a few defensive miscues.
Peyton Rowles, Kevin Parker, Sutter Moss and Shane Aldridge each recorded hits for Walnut Creek in the available stats, while Austin Basch and Ajani Wrighster had hits for the Philippines Baseball Group. With the game ending 5-0, the Crawdads closed out a strong all-around performance behind steady pitching and timely offense.
