Barons, Foresters Roll as Shutouts Highlight Wednesday CCL Slate
A busy Wednesday slate across the California Collegiate League featured big offensive performances, strong pitching and late-inning separation.
Wednesday's California Collegiate League action featured several dominant performances, with the Academy Barons and Santa Barbara Foresters both posting 14-run victories, while the San Luis Obispo Blues shut out Alameda and the Menlo Park Legends held off a late push from San Francisco.
The Walnut Creek Crawdads also used a six-run seventh inning to pull away from Sonoma, while the Orange County game remained in progress in extra innings.
Walnut Creek Crawdads 8, Sonoma Stompers 2
The Walnut Creek Crawdads used a six-run seventh inning to pull away from the Sonoma Stompers, earning an 8-2 win Wednesday night.
Sonoma struck first in the third inning when Tino Vasell homered to right field, bringing home Trent Keys and giving the Stompers a 2-0 lead. Walnut Creek answered in the sixth, cutting the deficit in half on Daniel Polasek's RBI double before Kevin Parker brought Polasek home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 2-2.
The Crawdads took control an inning later. Barrett Ronson singled in Riley Winchell to give Walnut Creek its first lead of the night before Alijah Ramos followed with a two-run double. TJ Woodson added another two-run double later in the inning, and Walnut Creek scored once more on an outfield error to stretch the lead to 8-2.
Walnut Creek finished with eight runs on eight hits, while Sonoma was held to two runs on four hits. The Crawdads also took advantage of five Sonoma errors, using the defensive miscues to extend innings and create scoring opportunities.
Menlo Park Legends 9, San Francisco Seagulls 7
The Menlo Park Legends held off the San Francisco Seagulls in a high-scoring matchup, earning a 9-7 win.
San Francisco scored first with one run in the opening inning and added another in the second, but Menlo Park responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. The Legends added two more in the third before breaking the game open with a four-run fifth inning.
The Seagulls continued to battle, scoring two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth to cut into the deficit. San Francisco finished with 13 hits, led by Armando Hurtado and Derek Waldvogel, who each recorded three-hit games. Ethan Lopez added two hits for the Seagulls.
Menlo Park totaled nine runs on 12 hits and held San Francisco scoreless over the final three innings to secure the win.
Academy Barons 14, Arroyo Seco Saints 1
The Academy Barons used a seven-run sixth inning and a four-run seventh to pull away from the Arroyo Seco Saints in a 14-1 victory.
Academy opened the scoring in the first when Jason Del Villar lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home Eiji Sawamura. Arroyo Seco tied the game in the third on Sean Asperger's solo home run, but the Barons answered in the bottom half as Nathaniel Williams singled in Sawamura to make it 2-1.
The Barons took full control in the sixth. Del Villar tripled in a run before Antonio Lujan launched a three-run home run, pushing the lead to 6-1. Academy continued the inning with run-scoring contributions from Chip Mertz, Williams and Del Villar to build a commanding advantage.
Academy added four more runs in the seventh, highlighted by a two-run single from Israel Espinoza, an RBI triple from Sawamura and an RBI groundout from Mertz. Sawamura added another RBI single in the eighth to complete the scoring.
The Barons finished with 14 runs on 17 hits, while holding Arroyo Seco to one run on six hits.
Santa Barbara Foresters 14, Philippines Baseball Group 1
The Santa Barbara Foresters rolled to a 14-1 win over the Philippines Baseball Group behind a balanced offensive effort and dominant pitching.
Santa Barbara broke the game open with five runs in the third inning. Joseph Sandusky and Wylan Nelson each drew bases-loaded walks before a wild pitch brought home another run. Joshua Woodworth followed with a two-run single, giving the Foresters a 5-0 lead.
The Philippines Baseball Group got on the board in the fourth when Nomar Vazquez singled to right field to score Austin Basch, but Santa Barbara responded with four more runs in the fifth. Sandusky drove in a run with an infield single, Woodworth added another two-run single and Nick Salmon brought home a run with an RBI single.
The Foresters added four runs in the seventh, including a two-run single from Christian Turner and a two-run single from Marcus Greis. Santa Barbara tacked on one more in the eighth to cap the scoring.
Woodworth led the Foresters offensively with four hits and four RBI. On the mound, Tanner Grove earned the win after allowing one run on two hits while striking out 12 over five innings. Santa Barbara's pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts and held the Philippines Baseball Group to three hits.
San Luis Obispo Blues 6, Alameda Merchants 0
The San Luis Obispo Blues shut out the Alameda Merchants, using early offense and steady pitching to earn a 6-0 win.
San Luis Obispo jumped ahead in the first inning after Kyle Becker tripled and scored on Diego Gonzalez's RBI single. Gonzalez later came home on CJ Moran's RBI single, giving the Blues an early 2-0 lead.
The Blues added three more runs in the fourth. Becker walked with the bases loaded to bring in Joseph Blank, Gonzalez followed with another bases-loaded walk and Cesar Chavez grounded out to score Dominick Najar, extending the lead to 5-0.
San Luis Obispo added its final run in the eighth when Najar doubled to bring home Diego Murillo. The Blues finished with six runs on eight hits and played error-free defense, while Alameda was held to three hits and committed two errors.
