June 16, 2019 Compton, CA Channy Ortiz (Grand Canyon) had three hits, including an RBI-double in the Academy Barons' five run sixth inning that helped the Barons overcome a three run deficit and go on to beat the Conejo Oaks 9-5 today at the MLB Youth Academy. Ortiz' double drove came with two outs in the sixth inning and drove in Trent Anderson from first base to cap a five run inning that gave the Barons the lead, 7-5, after trailing 5-2 through five. The five-run outburst was sparked by consecutive singles by Jair Donovan (Concordia) and Logan Pollack (Michigan) to lead off the inning and by Christian Lucio (Eastern Kentucky) who reached base on a dropped third strike. In turn, all three batters, once they reached first base, stole second, which generated runs for the Academy. First, Donovan scored on the passed ball that Lucio struck out on and, two outs later, Lucio scored on a wild pitch. The Barons also got a run on a sacrifice fly, a two-out RBI when Anderson singled and on Ortiz' double. Three Acadmey relief pitchers took it from there. Larry Barabino III (Southern), who entered the game for the Barons in the top of the fifth inning in relief of David Appleby with one out and two runners on base, retired the first two batters he faced to end the Conejo rally in the fifth and went on to pitch two scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Trevor Sutt (Long Beach JC) the pitched an inning and a third scoreless with two strikeouts and Elijah Pleasants, who relieved Sutt with two outs and two on in the eighth inning, got the last four outs to close out the Academy win. The Oaks scored first in the game on a solo home run by Ramon Gomez (Oklahoma Baptist) in the second inning and added two in the fourth when Steele Ledford (UC Santa Barbara) hit an RBI-triple and scored on a wild pitch. Travis Weston started on the mound for Conejo and cruised through the first three innings, facing a one-over-the-minimum twelve batters while striking out five, before surrendering two runs in the fourth inning on three singles and error. Weston, who received additional run support when the Oaks scored twice in the fifth inning on a hit batsman, two walks and an RBI-single by Nico Lima (Oxnard JC), pitched the bottom of the fifth scoreless and finished with eight strikeouts, leaving with the Oaks ahead 5-2. The Barons got two insurance runs in the seventh inning when Pollack led off with a single, stole second base and eventually scored on a wild pitch, and when Matthew Elizalde (Loyola) hit an RBI-single. Yuji Sakane (East LA JC) started on the mound for the Barons and allowed three runs on five hits in four innings of work. Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere around the CCL tonight: Santa Barbara, CA Connor Pavolony (Tennessee) hit an RBI-double, Diego Harris hit a two-run triple and Eric Kennedy (Texas) added a run-scoring single to spark a four-run seventh inning that turned a close two-run ballgame into a rout as the Santa Barbara Foresters beat the Orange County Riptide 10-4 today at Pershing Park. Even though the Foresters led for most of the game, the Riptide kept things close. When Santa Barbara scored once in the first inning after Kennedy, who had three hits in the game, hit a leadoff single and later scored on a sacrifice fly, Orange County answered right back in the their next at bat when Andre Antone (UC Irvine) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Likewise, when the Foresters scored twice in the bottom of the second inning via a balk and another sacrifice fly, the Riptide answered next inning with a pair of their own, scoring twice on a Michael Peabody (UC Irvine) single. After the Foresters scored once in their half of the third inning on a bases loaded walk to take the lead for good, Santa Barbara's starting pitcher Cole Quintanilla (Texas) put a halt to the back and forth scoring by retiring the side in order over the next two innings, compiling five strikeouts in his five innings of work. The Foresters added one run in the fifth inning when Tevin Tucker (West Virginia) hit an RBI-single, and added an unearned run in the eighth. Kevin Larson (Fresno St) pitched a scoreless and hitless sixth inning in relief of Quintanilla, Brad Demco pitched two scoreless and hitless innings, and Nico O'Donnell (Texas) retired three of four batters in the ninth, but did surrender a leadoff home run to Chad Crosbie (Miami) which completed the scoring. The Riptide utilized seven pitchers in today's game, all of whom allowed at least one hit, and were highlighted by the three strikeouts posted by Nick Jones (Georgia Southern) in two innings of work. Click here for recaps of this game Fairfield, CA Isaiah Verrett (UC Davis) had four hits, including a solo home run and a double, Wellington Balsley (Solano JC) hit a base loaded triple and an RBI-double, Christian Harkey (Savannah St) hit a pair of RBI-doubles and Josh Medina (Sonoma St) added a three-run double to lead the Solano Mudcats to a 20-9 rout of the San Francisco Seals today at Vanden High. Despite those performances, the game was not a blowout until late in the game. In fact, San Francisco, which split-squad two games today here and in Lincoln, led most of the game, scoring first to lead 1-0 after one, leading 3-2 after two, trailing 6-8 after the Mudcats had a six-run rally in the third, and leading 9-8 after four completed innings, a lead the Seals carried until the sixth when Solano tied the score. And then the Mudcats scored eleven times in the seventh to blow open the game. Diego Ramirez (Occidental), who pitched in relief of starter Caleb Hill (Savannah St), very much earned the win for Solano. Ramirez shut down the Seals for the last five and a third innings, entering the game to get the final out in the fourth inning after Shane Jones hit a three-run home run to chase Hill. At one point, Ramirez retired eleven batters in a row and finished with five strikeouts and three hits allowed in his five-plus shutout innings of work. Click here for recaps of this game Lincoln, CA The San Francisco Seals scored three runs with two outs in the seventh inning after the third batter of the inning struck out with two outs but reached first base safely on a dropped third strike and sparked a rally that turned a one-run deficit into a two-run lead and the Seals went on to beat the Lincoln Potters 6-5 tonight at McBean Stadium. The two-out seventh inning rally, capped by an RBI-single by Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) and a two-run single by Marco Castillo (Claremont McKenna), flipped the lead the Potters had just taken in their previous at bat when back-to-back RBI-doubles by Daniel Susac and Lorenzo Debrecht (Sierra) put Solano up 4-3. Sam Gomez (Citrus JC), who entered the game to pitch for San Francisco in relief of starter McGrain Pledger to get the final out in the sixth inning after Debrecht's double, made the lead stick despite allowing one run in the seventh on a Matt Lopez RBI-single and facing a runner on third with one out situation in the eighth, which he escaped by inducing a fielder's choice groundball that erased the runner at the plate and a runner caught stealing erased the batter who had reached. San Francisco, which split-squad two games today here and in Fairfield, scored the first three runs of the game on three singles and a pair of Lincoln errors and led until Zach Arnold (Oregon) hit a two-run triple in the bottom of the third in for the Potters to make the score 3-2 Seals. Travis Parker (Utah Valley) started on the mound for Lincoln, pitching six innings with three strikeouts before turning the pitching duties over to Nathan Lemos (UC Davis), who pitched the three-run seventh, and Ian Miller (Yakima Valley JC), who retired six of the seven batters he faced, striking out three.
