Irvine, CA
Hayden Shenefield, Hunter Bigge (Harvard)
and Josh Carpenter (Louisiana Tech) allowed only one run on six hits, combining to strike out eight, and Paul Gomez hit a two-run triple in a three-run fourth inning to lead the Orange County Riptide to a 6-1 win over the Long Beach Legends today at Concordia University. The win clinched the CCL South Division title for the Riptide and an automatic berth in the CCL playoffs set to start a week from today at the MLB Youth Academy in Compton. Shenenfield started on the mound for Orange County and threw five shutout innings with five strikeouts to pick up the win. Bigge pitched the sixth and seventh innings, allowing the one run on an RBI-single by Jake Sahagian (Sonoma St) with one out in the sixth, but then retired the next five in order. Carpenter picked up where Bigge left off and retired all six batters he faced in order to close out the win. Gomez, Logan Pouelsen (Hawaii) and Dominic Fletcher (Arkansas) each had two hits for the Riptide. Joe Caparis (Pepperdine) was the only Long Beach player with two.

Santa Barbara, CA
Tanner Lawson (St. Edwards)
notched seven strikeouts in six and a third innings scoreless, Nathan Wiles (Oklahoma) retired all five batters he faced and Garret Gayle (Rice) withstood a ninth-inning rally similar to the one he faced two nights ago in San Luis Obispo by striking out three in the ninth to lead the Santa Barbara Foresters to a 2-1 win over the Conejo Oaks tonight at Pershing Park. Leading 2-0 heading into the ninth inning, Gayle, who allowed four ninth inning runs Wednesday night in a loss to the Blues, struck out the first two batters before things got interesting again. Brandon Lewis (LA Pierce) reached on a walk, DJ Miller (Ole Miss) singled, Chase Cockrell (Ole Miss) singled to load the bases, and Grant Mayeaux (San Diego St) reached on an error to force one run in and the tying run to third base. Gayle struck out the next batter, however, to close out the win. Luke Ritter (Wichita St) drove in the first run of the game with an RBI-single in the first and Steven Coe (UC San Diego) executed a squeeze bunt in the seventh to produced what would turn out to be the game winner.

Daylen Calicdan (Hawaii) and Nick Simmons (Diablo Valley) each had a game-high three hits for Walnut Creek. Compton, CA
Randy Rubio (Marymount)
hit a grand slam, an RBI-single and a sacrifice fly to generate six runs, Garrett Ouellete hit a three-run home run and Joseph Argumedo (Lynn) had a pair of run-producing outs to lead the Academy Barons to a 14-6 win over the Southern California Catch tonight at the MLB Youth Academy. Rubio’s slam came with two outs in the third inning and the Catch, who had scored in the first inning on a triple by Grant Robbins (UNLV), a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Ducoff (Houston Baptist) and a solo home run by Shay Whitcomb (UC San Diego), leading 2-0. Oullete’s blast also came with two outs and capped a five-run fifth inning that put the Barons up 9-3 and, after the Catch trimmed the lead by scoring three times in the eighth inning on run-scoring singles by Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific), Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) and Omar Ortiz (Pacific), the Barons plated four more in the eighth to post the final score.

San Luis Obispo, CA
Austin Isenhart (New Mexico)
recorded nine strikeouts in six and a third innings, Jake Swiech (San Jose St) had four in an inning and two thirds, Myles Emmerson (Cal Poly) hit a single and a two-run double, and Justin Beck (San Jose St) doubled and hit a two-run single to lead the San Luis Obispo Blues to a 7-4 win over the Arroyo Seco Saints tonight at Sinsheimer Park. The win, coupled with the Conejo Oaks loss to the Santa Barbara Foresters tonight, moved the Blues back into a tie for the last playoff spot reserved for the top finisher of the CCL Central Division. Marco Murillo (Campbellsville), who drove Beck in with a single in the second inning, forced home another run after Emmerson’s double in the seventh with a bases-loaded walk to also finish with a game-high two RBI. Blake Burton (Washington) drove in two runs for the Saints with a game-high three hits, including driving in the tying run in the seventh after Josh Magee (Faulkner) led off with a triple and scored on an RBI-ground out and Gabe Chavez (Rio Hondo) doubled and scored on Burton’s single to make the score 4-4. Emerson then drove in the game winners in the bottom of the seventh. Dan Beavers (Chico St) retired three of four batters in the ninth to close out the win for the Blues. Alameda, CA
Chase Gardner (UCONN)
and Nolan Bond (Houston) combined to throw either a no-hitter or a one-hit shutout, depends on who you ask, as the Healdsburg Prune Packers beat the Neptune Beach Pearl 5-0 in the second game of a doubleheader the two teams split today at the College of Alameda. Officially, Gardner and Bond will be credited for a one-hitter, as the home team report of the game awarded an infield hit to pinch-hitter Tim Lichty (Texas A&M) in the bottom of the seventh inning when the groundball he hit was just out of the reach of first baseman Cameron Warren (Texas Tech) who got his glove on the ball but couldn’t reel it in to make a play. The visiting team report of the game ruled the play an error on Warren but the home team report has the final say. Either way, it was a remarkable performance by Gardner and Bond. Gardner struck out twelve batters in five innings, walking four, before handing the ball to Bond, who besides allowing the one hit, walked one batter, hit one batter and retired everyone else, including five on strikeouts, over the last four innings. Jamey Smart (LMU) hit two home runs in the nightcap, a solo shot in the sixth inning and a two-run homer in the ninth to lead Healdsburg offensively.

Neptune overcame an early 4-0 deficit in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring four times in the fourth inning, three on a home run by James Free II (Pacific), to tie the score, and five times in the fifth to take the lead and go on to win 11-7. Free, who followed his home run with an RBI-single in his next at bat, finished with a game-high four RBI, and Andrew Rosa (Oklahoma St), who had three RBI on two singles, were the leaders offensively for the Pearl. Grant Little (Texas Tech) doubled and singled twice, driving in two, and Cole Brodnansky (Santa Rosa JC) hit three singles to lead Healdsburg.

With the doubleheader split, each team inches closer to clinching a spot in the CCL playoffs a week from Friday in Los Angeles and each continues to battle with the other for the top spot in the CCL standings. The magic number for Healdsburg, who now has a one game lead on Neptune in the CCL standings, is one: One more win and they are assured at least a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Neptune’s magic number is two.

Brennan McKenzie (Cal Poly Pomona)
hit a two-run home run to highlight a four-run first inning, and Corey Harrell (Graceland) hit a two-run home run in the seventh to cap the scoring as the Arroyo Seco Saints beat the Academy Barons 14-1 today at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Alex Briggs (LIU Brooklyn) had a game-high three hits, all singles, and joined McKenzie and Harrell with two RBI for the game, as did Blake Burton (Washington) who had a pair of run-scoring singles. Jumpei Akanuma (Lee), who started on the mound for the Saints and threw six innings to earn the win, Grant Vogenthaler (San Francisco St), Corbin Lamb (Lee) and Gabe Golob (NYU) combined to hold the Barons’ hitters to four hits and did not issue a single walk. Eric Whitfield, who singled and doubled in his first two plate appearances, had two of the Barons four hits.

San Luis Obispo, CA
The San Luis Obispo Blues scored four runs on six singles in the ninth inning to post a 5-4 come-from-behind walk-off win over the Santa Barbara Foresters tonight at Sinsheimer Park. With one out in the inning, Myles Emmerson (Cal Poly) drove in Price Visintainer (UAB), Justin Beck (San Jose St) drove in Ricky Martinez (Sacramento St) and, after Marco Murillo (Campbellsville) singled to load the bases, Tate Samuelson (Cal Poly) drove in two for the walk-off win. It had been eight innings since the Blues had scored in the game, that was when Andrew Ramos (Cumberlands) hit a solo home run with two outs in the first inning before the Blues hitters went silent for seven innings. Daniel Vasquez (Tennessee) started on the mound for Santa Barbara recording eight strikeouts in six innings and retiring the last eight batters he faced in order. Jack Schneider (Grand Canyon) started and also went six innings for San Luis Obispo, allowing four runs on six hits. The Conejo Oaks beat the Southern California Catch 7-3 in the regularly scheduled game between the two teams today at Biola Univesity. Earlier the Catch finalized a win over the Oaks in the resumption of yesterday’s game between the same two teams in Thousand Oaks which was suspended because of darkness with the Catch leading 6-5 in the eleventh inning. The suspended game was completed with no change to the score. Details of today’s game were not reported as of post time.

Healdsburg, CA
Landon Etzel (Houston) had a pinch-hit three-run home run, and Bryce Nagata (Sonoma St) and Clay Koelzer (Texas Tech) each had RBI-doubles to lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers to a 9-3 win over the Neptune Beach Pearl today at Recreation Park. The win flip-flopped the position of the two teams atop the CCL standings, a common occurrence this past week, with Healdsburg now holding a half-game lead. Etzel’s home run, which came in the eighth inning with two outs, while notable, was only an exclamation to the Packers win. It was Koelzer’s double in the fifth inning, which came with the bases loaded, two outs and the score 3-2, was the big hit in the game. Keolzer’s double, especially notable because Neptune’s pitcher Andrew Davis (Texas Tech) had struck out the previous two batters when Healdsburg loaded the bases with no outs, plated two runs and was followed by an RBI-single by Sawyer Pittman (San Jose St) to make the score 6-2. Previous to that turning point, the two teams had been trading single runs with Neptune scoring one in the first inning when Harrison Moore doubled and scored on a two-out single by Andrew Rosa (Oklahoma St); Healdsburg scoring in the bottom half of the inning when Nagata led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by Jamey Smart (LMU). Healdsburg evened the score again in the third inning after Neptune scored an unearned run in the second when Cameron Warren (Texas Tech), who had four hits in the game and took over the league’s top spot in average for the first time this season with a .458 mark, drove in Nagata who had walked, and then took the lead in the fourth when Nagata drove in Bret Bautista (San Jose St) with a two-out double. Cooper Casad (Pacific) started on the mound for the Packers, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks to only allow two runs over five innings to earn the win. Davis, who struck out six in six innings, suffered the loss.

Irvine, CA
Shay Whitcomb (UC San Diego)
hit a two-out three-run home run, Mitchel Bumann (Hawaii-Pacific) and Tyler Fisher (Olivet Nazarene) each had doubles to score a crucial run in the eleventh inning, and Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) drove in Grant Robbins (UNLV) with what would be the game-winning run in the twelfth to lead the Southern California Catch to a 7-6 win over the Orange County Riptide today at Concordia University. The win snapped the Riptide’s eight-game winning streak and also snapped the Catch’s losing streak to the Riptide. It was the first win for the Catch in the six meetings the two teams will have this summer. Whitcomb’s homer in the fifth inning, which followed a run-scoring single by Tobias Johnson (Arkansas St), gave the Catch a 4-1 lead that would not last. Jake Pulcheon (Houston Baptist), who scored the opening run of the game after leading off the second inning with a single, and Logan Pouelsen (Hawaii) went double-double to lead off the sixth to make the score 4-2, and Pouelsen produced another run in seventh by drawing a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI-ground out Chase Sebby to tie it 4-4. The Catch took the lead again in the seventh inning when Robbins drove in Nate Pecota (William Jewell) who had singled, only to have Orange County tie the score again in their half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Fletcher (Arkansas). That pattern repeated in the eleventh inning when Bumann and Fisher gave the Catch a one-run lead, only to have Pouelsen tie it with a solo home run, but it didn’t repeat in the twelfth after Sandmann’s RBI. Conner Davis (Creighton), who entered the game to pitch for the Catch after Pouelsen’s home run, retired the last five batters in order to pick up the win.

San Luis Obispo, CA
The Academy Barons scored three times in the fifth inning, twice on a two-run single by Garrett Ouellete, to take the lead and added insurance runs by way of a two-out RBI-double by Bruce Martin (Stetson) followed by an two-run triple by Caleb Squire (Bellevue) in the seventh and a solo home run by Solomon Bates (USC) in the ninth to beat the San Luis Obispo Blues 9-5 today at Sinsheimer Park. After both teams had scored twice in their half of the first inning, Justin Beck (San Jose St) gave the Blues a brief 4-2 lead in the fourth by driving in two with a one-out single. Wesley Albert (Lee), who came in to pitch in fifth inning in relief of starter Matt Mogollon (Chapman), held San Luis Obispo scoreless for three innings, striking out four to pick up the win. The Barons’ Randy Rubio (Marymount) and the Blues’ Tate Samuelson (Cal Poly) each doubled and singled twice to finish with a game-high three hits. Marco Murillo (Campbellsville), who started and suffered the loss, and Josh Goldberg (San Jose St), who pitched in relief, each had five strikeouts in four innings pitched for San Luis Obispo.

Ventura, CA
The pitching foursome of Ray Lambert (San Diego St), Angus Denton (Arkansas), Miguel Salud (Cal Lutheran) and Robbie Medel (Arizona) combined to record 17 strikeouts, including two in every inning but one, and DJ Miller (Ole Miss) tripled and Sam Shaikin (Valparaiso) hit a run-scoring double in a three-run second inning that was all the run support needed as the Conejo Oaks beat the Ventura Halos 4-1 today at Ventura College. Lambert, who started and went four innings scoreless, posted the most strikeouts with seven, followed by Salud and Medel who had four each in two-inning stints, and Denton who struck out two in his one inning of work. For the other side, Dyaln Francis (Cal Poly Pomona) also posted seven strikeouts, but allowed the four Oaks runs on five hits over eight innings to suffer the loss. Shaikin, who singled later in the game, and Ventura’s Dayton Provost (Ventura JC), who tripled and singled, were the only players with multiple hits in the game. Blake Mann (UCSB) doubled and scored the Halos only run in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Rudy Aguilar (Ventura JC). Brandon Lewis (LA Pierce JC) doubled home Max Weinstein (Cal Lutheran) in the eighth inning with the Oaks’ final run. Provost, whose two hits today raised his average in league play to .455, fell out of the top spot in that category for the first time in weeks, and now trails Healdsburg’s Cameron Warren (Texas Tech), whose four hits today raised his average to .458.

David Miranda (Florida Atlantic) hit a two-run home run, Joey Parente (Lewis & Clark) hit a solo shot and Beau Phillip (San Joaquin JC) hit a run scoring triple to lead the CCL South All-Stars to an 8-4 win over the CCL North in the 2017 CCL All-Star Game tonight at the MLB Youth Academy. All three players represented the Orange County Riptide in the game with Miranda, by virtue of the slightly greater run production, receiving Most Valuable Player honors. Other notable highlights of the game that featured 35 position players sharing field time and 19 pitchers throwing, mostly, one inning each, included Academy Barons pitcher Matt Mogollon (Chapman) striking out the side in the seventh inning and the Rockville Rock Hounds’ Grant St. Martin (Sonoma St) two-run double in the first, while San Luis Obispo Blues Price Visintainer (UAB) was the only player to record two hits (double and single) and score twice. The game was televised live by Fox Sports and scouts from all 30 MLB teams were attendance.

If you are not able to attend the CCL All-Star Game tomorrow night at the MLB Youth Academy in Compton, there may be a couple of ways to view the broadcast.

Hopefully, your local cable provider has chosen to pick up the feed from Fox Sports West and will broadcast the game live on TV. Game time is 7pm PST.

The other way you may be able to view the broadcast is with the Fox Sports Go app. This is the first year our game will be live-streamed on this app and we are not exactly sure how or if it will work in your area. Our contacts at Fox Sports have shown us that the game is on the Fox Sports Go schedule on their app, but when we check the app on our devices here in Santa Barbara, the game is not on the schedule. This may be because our local cable provider has not added the game to the schedule or for some other reason that we are not aware of. Hopefully, if you download the app and sign into your account with your content provider the game will appear on the schedule and you can watch it on your device, cast it to your TV, etc.

If none of these options work we always have DVD copies of the broadcast available to send to you as soon as we get a master copy from Fox Sports. This usually takes a few days and we will certainly be posting info to let you know when they are available.

Tickets to attend the game in person can be purchased at the front gate (general admission). Online purchases of reserved seating is sold out and no longer active.

Santa Barbara, CA
Tanner Lawson (St. Edwards)
and Evan Kravetz (Rice) combined for nine scoreless innings pitched and Jimmy Galusky (West Virginia) hit a three-run home run to lead the Santa Barbara Foresters to an 8-0 shutout win over the Neptune Beach Pearl tonight at Pershing Park. It was the first of three meetings this weekend between the top two teams in the league the last few years and, as would be expected, starting pitching will and did determine much of the results. Lawson retired the first seven batters he faced in order before allowing two singles and a walk with one out in the third inning. It would turn out to be the biggest threat Neptune Beach would mount in the game and Lawson pitched out of it unscathed, striking out one batter and inducing an inning-ending ground ball with the bases loaded for the last out of the inning. On the other side of the game, Pearl starting pitcher Caleb Freeman (Texas Tech) gave up single runs in the second and third innings on run-scoring singles by Steven Coe (UC San Diego) and Ryan Reynolds (Texas), and was charged with two more runs scored after Austin Todd (Texas) tripled to lead off the fifth inning and scored on an Evan Lee (Arkansas) single which finished Freeman’s outing. The change did not slow the Foresters bats, however, as relief pitcher Alex Trautner gave up a double to Joshua Jung (Texas Tech) that drove Lee home, a walk and then Galusky hit his three-run shot. Santa Barbara would go on to score once more in the seventh inning when John Jensen (Santa Barbara CC) tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Meanwhile, Lawson and Kravetz were throwing zero-run innings. Lawson finished with six strikeouts in six innings of work, and Kravetz recorded four strikeouts and faced the minimum nine batters in his three innings. Todd finsished with a game-high three hits (single, double and triple), and Harrison Smith finished with two to lead Neptune Beach.

Auburn, CA
With the score tied in the seventh inning Dylan McPhillips (Sacramento St) hit a solo home run to spark a three-run two-out rally to lead the Auburn Wildcats to a 6-3 win over the Rockville Rock Hounds tonight at James Field. McPhillips’ homer chased Rockville’s starting pitcher Rylan Haney, who struck out five in his six and two-thirds innings of work, from the game and was followed by a Nate Verlin (Pacific) double, a run-scoring single by Jacob Booker (Air Force) and three walks to set the final score. The Rock Hounds, who had scored two in the first inning on RBI-singles by Grant St. Martin (Sonoma St) and Kirby Broadbent (Campbellsville), had just tied the game in their half of the inning, scoring an unearned run before McPhillips changed the course of the game. Paul Gallegos (William Jessup) held the Rock Hounds scoreless the last two innings to earn the save in relief of Josh Hook (William Jessup) who picked up the win in relief of Hayden Piner (William Jessup), who recorded five strikeouts over five innings of work. Verlin had run-scoring singles for Auburn in the first and third innings to finish with a game-high three hits and two RBI. Dominic Foscalina (Utah) had three hits, including one double, to lead Rockville.

San Luis Obispo, CA
Mac Lardner (Gonzaga)
struck out ten hitters in seven innings pitched and Justin Beck (San Jose St) hit a two-out bases loaded two-run single to put the San Luis Obispo Blues ahead for good in their 5-4 win over the Orange County Riptide tonight at Sinsheimer Park. Lardner, who has 26 strikeouts in three CCL starts this summer, had only one inning when the Riptide had a runner reach second base, the second, when Orange County scored four times on doubles by Jake Pulcheon (Houston Baptist) and Will Proctor (Georgia) and a triple by Beau Phillip (San Joaquin JC), to take a 4-2 lead. The Blues answered in the third inning, scoring three times, capped by Beck’s go-ahead hit, to retake the lead. Lardner and, for the last two innings, Jack Cosca (Cal) and Josh Goldberg (San Jose St) held the Riptide scoreless, allowing only three hits over the last seven innings. Orange County did load the bases in the top of the ninth inning on two walks and a single, but Goldberg came into the game to relieve Cosca for the final out, a flyball to centerfield, to pick up the save. Adam Fogel (Hawaii) had a game-high three hits, and Tyson Quolas (Monterey Bay) and Beck finshed with two hits each to lead the San Luis Obispo offense. David Miranda (Florida Atlantic) had a single and a double to lead Orange County.

Pasadena, CA
Corey Harrell (Graceland)
hit a grand slam and Blake Burton added a two-run home run as the Arroyo Seco Saints offense erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning en route to beating the Southern California Catch 10-5 tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Catch had taken a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning, having scored three times on an RBI-double by Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific) and run-scoring singles by Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) and Anthony Seminaris (Arkansas-Ft. Smith), and ran four pitchers to mound during the sixth to try, first, to preserve the lead and, second, to limit the damage, but Harrell and Burton thwarted those plans. In the big inning, Arroyo Seco collected five hits, two walks and a hit batsman to score the seven. Burton, who also had an RBI-single in the first inning and singled and scored in the eighth, finished with a game-high three hits, while four other Saints hitters had two hits each. Seminaris and Omar Ortiz (Pacific) each had two hits to lead the Catch. Gunnar Friend (Avila) picked up the win on the mound for Arroyo Seco, recording four strikeouts in four innings in relief of starter Shamon Moss (Georgetown, NAIA).

Healdsburg, CA
The Healdsburg Prune Packers beat the Walnut Creek Crawdads by one run for the second night in a row, holding off a late charge by the Crawdads to win 5-4 tonight at Recreation Park. Last night the Packers chased down the leading Crawdads for a dramatic come-from-behind win, tonight it was Walnut Creek doing the chasing. Down 5-2 after seven innings, the Crawdads scored once in the eighth on an RBI-double by Matt Poulin, and put the tying runs aboard with no outs in the ninth, but Healdsburg reliever Shamus Lyons (Santa Rosa JC) retired the next three batters, allowing only one of the runners to score on a sacrifice fly by Ben Skinner (Harvard) to close out the win. Clay Koelzer (Texas Tech) hit a solo home run in the second inning to start the scoring for Healdsburg and, in the third, Cameron Warren (Texas Tech) hit a two-run single and Dane Tofteland (Indiana St) hit an RBI-single to score the third. Bryce Nagata (Sonoma St), who had a game-high four hits, doubled and later scored the fifth Packers run in the eighth inning. Chase Gardner started on the mound for Healdsburg and recorded six strikeouts and allowed only one hit over five innings to earn the win.

Long Beach, CA
The Academy Barons scored four runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Caleb Squire (Bellevue) and a run-scoring triple by Denzl Chapman (San Diego St) to take an 11-8 lead, and then held-off a last inning comeback by the Long Beach Legends to win 11-10 today at Long Beach City College. It was the fifth double and second triple of the 14-hit game for the Barons compared to the only one double among 12 hits by Long Beach. Wesley Albert (Lee University) pitched the last four innings for the Barons, recording six strikeouts, to pick up the win, but faced a bit of adversity in the ninth when Long Beach got back-to-back singles with one out from Tommy Anderson (Doane) and Richie O’Reilly (Georgetown), both of whom would advance and score on a passed ball, a balk and a wild pitch to get the Legends within one. But Albert recorded the last two outs on a strikeout and a flyout to close out the win. At one point in the game Long Beach had held 7-3 lead, having scored six runs on six singles and three walks in the third inning, and once in the second, but the Barons answered with four runs of their own in the sixth, the big hit being a Chapman two-run double, to tie the score 7-7. Long Beach added an unearned run in their half of the sixth inning to retake the lead, but that only lasted until the Barons took the lead for good in the eighth. Chapman finished with a game-high three RBI, and his first double in the fifth gave him a game-high three hits along with Dailin Lee (UC Irvine), who tripled and singled twice, driving in two for the Barons, and Michael Stefanic (Westmont), who had three singles to lead Long Beach.

Auburn, CA
Harrison Moore
hit a pair of home runs and Kevin Stone (Harvard) pitched six shutout innings to lead the Neptune Beach Pearl to a 5-3 win over the Auburn Wildcats tonight at James Field. Hitting in the leadoff position, Moore led off the game with a solo shot and did the same to lead off the third inning to give the Pearl the early lead, a lead that Stone made stick by retiring 15 of the first 16 hitters he faced and 18 of 21 overall, recording six strikeouts and allowing only two hits. Neptune Beach added a run in the fourth inning on an RBI-groundout by Jake Chappell (Oklahoma St), and two in the eight on a run-scoring single by Kai Moody (Cabrillo JC) and a Chappell sacrifice fly, before Auburn came roaring back when Stone was lifted for a reliever. The Wildcats scored three times in the eighth inning on a two-out, bases load three-run double by Kale Leach, and once more in the ninth when Jacob Booker (Air Force) doubled and later scored on a groundout, but the Wildcats fell short of tying the game. Zach Miller (West Virginia) singled twice and was driven home twice by Chappell to also highlight the Pearl’s performance. Manuel Velasquez started on the mound for Auburn and struck out six in six innings of work, suffering the loss.

Elsewhere in the CCL today:

San Luis Obispo, CA
Three pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts and Price Visintainer (Ala-Birmingham) drove in the tying and go-ahead runs with the second of his three hits as the San Luis Obispo Blues beat the Santa Barbara Foresters 3-2 tonight at Sinsheimer Park. Bobby Ay (Cal Poly) started on the mound for the Blues and struck out six in five and two-thirds innings, Jake Swiech (San Jose St), the first reliever in, struck out four in two and one-third innings, and Austin Isenhart (New Mexico) struck out three in his one inning of work in the ninth. All three pitchers used the strikeout to escape run-scoring situations relatively unscathed, none more so than Isenhart who, although striking out the first two batters he faced in a one-run game to start the ninth inning, gave up a single and a walk to put the tying and go-ahead runners on board. But, as the storyline of the game proved out, Isenhart struck out the last batter to close out the win. The pitching on the Santa Barbara side was maybe even slightly more dominant than San Luis Obispo as Evan Lee (Arkansas), Nathan Wiles (Oklahoma) and Garrett Gayle (Rice) combined to record 11 strikeouts in eight innings, allowing fewer hits and few walks than their counterparts, but were undone by Visintainer’s single in the third inning that score two unearned runs and proved to be the difference in the game.

Pasadena, CA
Jumpei Akanuma (Lee University)
retired the first 15 batters in order and the Arroyo Seco Saints jumped out to a 7-0 lead tonight in their game against the Long Beach Legends, but it took two runs in the eighth inning, including a home run by Brendan Krob (Evansville), to hold off a late charge by Long Beach to secure an 9-8 win tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Akanuma was nearly perfect for five innings. The one hitter he allowed on base, Trevor Casanova (Northridge), singled to lead off the fourth inning but was erased in an inning-ending double play. Pitching with a comfortable 7-0 lead, Akanuma gave some ground in the sixth inning when Jake Sahagian (Sonoma St) led off with a solo home run and Luke DeVenney singled after one out, but he retired the next two batters in the sixth and then three in a row in the seventh, two on strike outs, before Long Beach finally got his number in the eighth. The Legends scored four times on four hits, including an RBI-double by Michael Stefanic (Wesmont), to chase Akanuma, still holding a 7-4 lead with one out left in the inning, but Quint Robinson (Tennessee) struck out the only batter he faced to end the threat. On offense, the Saints scored in the first, third and fifth innings on RBI-singles by Brett Adams, Alex Briggs (LIU Brooklyn), Josh Magee (Faulkner) and Corey Harrell (Graceland) to post the 7-0 lead and, when Long Beach closed the gap to 7-4, Krob came through with an important insurance run, because the Legends weren’t quite done. They scored three more times in the ninth inning on an RBI-single by Corey Treyes (Coppin St) and a two-out bases-loaded two-run single by Stefanic, but came up one run short, as Josh Little (NC Central) came into the game to get the last out on a groundout to earn the save.

The Walnut Creek Crawdads broke open a tight, evenly-matched game by scoring three times each in the seventh and ninth innings to beat the Rockville Rock Hounds 10-4 today at Yarborough Stadium. The Crawdads put four consecutive batters on base on two singles and two walks, took advantage of a couple of wild pitches to score in the seventh inning, and then, in the ninth, used a double by Jake Allen (Harvard), run-scoring singles by Grant Chapman (Los Medanos JC) and John Ballard (Colorado Mesa) and one more run-scoring wild pitch to put the game away. Connor Caspersen and Nick Simmons (Diablo Valley JC) each had three singles and an RBI to lead Walnut Creek, Brandt Frazier (Rice) had two hits, including a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the Rockville offense, and Chris Allen (College of Marin) struck out seven batters in four-plus innings of work, but allowed four runs on eight hits to suffer the loss.

Solomon Bates (USC)
hit a three-run home run, Angel Mora hit a two-run version and Tyler Tungate (Faulkner) notched seven strikeouts in four innings of relief to lead the Academy Barons to an 8-4 win over the Southern California Catch today at Biola University. Mora got the scoring going for the Barons, hitting his homer with one out in the top of the first inning and, after the Catch scored one in their half of the first on an RBI-single by Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific) and tied the score in the fourth on a double by Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) and a run-scoring single by Omar Ortiz (Pacific), Bates put the Academy up for good with his three-run shot. Bates added an RBI-single in the seventh to finish with a game-high four RBI, and scored the final run of the game on a single by Hunter Allen (Alabama St). Bates, Mora and Sandmann each had three hits to share game-high honors in that category. The ten-run performance by the Barons was in spite of the 15 strikeouts Zac Whittaker (Fresno CC), Matthew Wade (SE Missouri St) and Tucker Thomason (Fresno CC) compiled combined.

Thousand Oaks, CA
DJ Miller (Ole Miss)
had a four-for-five game, drove in three runs, stole two bases and scored twice to lead the Conejo Oaks to a 12-9 win over the Orange County Riptide today at Sparky Anderson Field. Miller’s day at the plate and bases was the most notable from among good offensive performances turned in by players from both teams today as the Riptide and Oaks decided to have a “staff day” on the mound, sending six and seven pitchers to the mound respectively. The result: eleven hitters from both teams recorded multiple-hit games and both teams collected a total of 15 hits for the game. Orange County’s David Miranda (Florida Atlantic), who hit a three-run home run and a pair of run-scoring doubles to post a game-high five RBI, had the best offensive day of any player, but in a losing cause. Sam Shaikin (Valparaiso) had a double, single and three runs scored and Zayne Willems (Texas Tech) had a double and three RBI to join Miller in top performances for the Oaks. Joey Parente and Cooper Uhl (LMU) each had three hits to join Miranda in highlighting the Riptide performance.

Oakland, CA
Alex Baeza (Hawaii)
homered and doubled twice and Ben Skinner (Harvard) drove in three runs on a pair of doubles to lead the Walnut Creek Crawdads to a 9-3 win over the Rockville Rock Hounds tonight at Laney College. The Crawdads roughed up Rock Hounds starting pitcher Rylan Haney for eleven hits and eight runs in his six innings of work and, although Baeza and Skinner produced most of the run production, David Langer (Chabot) started the scoring with an RBI-triple in the second, Josh Ballard (Colorado Mesa) hit a solo home run in the sixth and both Grant Chapman (Los Medanos) and Daylen Calicdan (Hawaii) added run-scoring singles. Walnut Creek’s starting pitcher McGrane Pledger (Laney) went seven innings, allowing two runs while scattering eight hits, two each by Grant St. Martin (Sonoma St) and Jack Pridy, to earn the win.

Santa Barbara, CA
The Conejo Oaks scored three times in the eighth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 advantage, scored an insurance run in the ninth and relief pitchers Evan McMillin (UC Irvine) and Robby Medel (Arizona) punched out five batters in two innings to close out a 6-4 win over the Santa Barbara Foresters tonight at Pershing Park. Brandon Lewis (LA Pierce) tied the game in the eighth inning for the Oaks with an RBI-double and scored the go-ahead run when Codi Santana (Hawaii-Pacific) drove him in with a single. Once Conejo got the lead it was up to McMillin and Medel to close out the win. McMillin struck out the first two batters he faced in the bottom of the eighth inning and, after allowing a walk and a base hit, got the third out on a ground ball to hold the lead. Medel was a bit more dominant in his inning of work. He struck out three to earn the save. Santa Barbara had posted their 4-2 lead early, scoring an unearned run in the first inning, another in the second and two in the third on a two-run single by Evan Lee (Arkansas). Foresters’ starting pitcher Daniel Vasquez (Tennessee) had six strikeouts in six innings of work but did allow two Oaks runs in the second inning, one on an RBI-double by Santana and another on a Juan Gonzalez (Oklahoma Baptist) single.

Irvine, CA
David Miranda (Florida Atlantic) hit a grand slam and three pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts as the Orange County Riptide beat the Southern California Catch 6-1 today at Concordia University. Miranda’s home run was the big hit in the Riptide’s five-run sixth inning and was setup after Orange County loaded the bases and scored one run on three walks and a single. Up until that point, the game had been a close one. The Catch had posted a 1-0 lead in their first at bat when Mitchell Bumann (Hawaii-Pacific) doubled and scored on an Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) sacrifice fly. Southern California’s starting pitcher Bailey Martin (Miami) held tight to that lead, retiring the Riptide in order for three innings before issuing two walks in the fourth and pitching around them, and another walk in the fifth and pitching around that one too. Martin then issued two more walks to open the sixth inning before being relieved and, three batters later, Miranda finally capitalized for the Riptide. Hayden Shenefield, Timothy Holdgrafer and Braxton Smith (Louisiana Tech) were in total command on the mound for Orange County. After surrendering the one run in the first, Shenefield retired the next 13 hitters he faced, five of them on strikeouts. Holdgrafer was just as relentless, retiring nine of the ten batters he faced, the exception being a double by Shay Whitcomb (UCSD) to lead off the eighth inning, and recorded six strikeouts. And Smith was the same, striking out three in the ninth inning to close out the win.

The Arroyo Seco Saints scored eight unanswered runs to start the first game of a doubleheader against the Academy Barons today at the MLB Urban Youth Academy, two on a two-out triple by Dustin Krob (Dayton) in the second inning and three on a home run by Tyler Durna (UCSD) in the fouth, en route to a 9-4 victory. Krob, who also singled in the first inning and hit a second triple in the sixth, scored three times in the game, and Durna added a RBI-ground out to finish with a game-high four RBI. The Barons flipped the tables on the Saints in the second game, however, scoring eleven times on twelve hits to win the second half of the doubleheader 11-4. Javier Garcia (Compton JC) led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, Joseph Argumedo (Lynn) drove in three runs on a double and a ground out and Roosevelt Bates (USC) had two singles and two RBI to lead the Academy offense.

Long Beach, CA
Jake Scott (Houston Baptist)
hit a bases-clearing three-run double in the fourth inning and three Long Beach Legends pitchers stranded 14 baserunners to lead the Legends to a 6-2 victory over the San Luis Obispo Blues today at Long Beach City College. Scott’s double, the fourth consecutive hit Long Beach put together to open the fourth inning, followed an RBI-single by Trevor Steinman (Chico St) in the third which plated Robert Barham (Long Beach CC) who had doubled, to put the score at 4-0. The four-run lead was just the cushion the Long Beach pitchers needed as San Luis Obispo put runners on base in all but one inning. Legends’ starting pitcher John Szczesny (Azusa Pacific) pitched around seven hits to allow only one run, on a Price Visintainer (Ala-Birmingham) RBI-single in the fifth, and Jacob Alcorn and Harrison Smith (Oral Roberts) stranded six runners in their three innings of relief to secure the win. Michael Stefanic (Westmont) doubled and tripled to highlight the Long Beach performance.

Healdsburg, CA
Kale Leach
came to bat with two outs in the ninth inning today with two runners in scoring position and couldn’t have known his at bat would determine the outcome of the game. As it turned out, with the 6-3 score comfortably in favor of the Auburn Wildcats, Leach’s ensuing two-out, two-run single was all the difference. The two runs increased Auburn’s lead to 8-3, just enough cushion as the Healdsburg Prune Packers scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth, three of them on a home run by Cameron Warren (Texas Tech), but the Packers fell one run short and Auburn held on for an 8-7 win today at Recreation Park. It was just that kind of a topsy-turvy game, with both teams trading runs early and, when Auburn would start to pull away, Healdsburg would come back. Sam Curtis (William Jessup) had the other big hit for Auburn, a two-run single in the sixth, and Grant Little (Texas Tech) matched Warren with a game-high three RBI on two singles and a groundout to lead Healdsburg.

Compton, CA
Bruce Martin (Stetson)
had the performance of the CCL season so far, driving in seven runs on a grand slam, a two-run double and a sacrifice fly to lead the Academy Barons to a 10-5 win over the Conejo Oaks tonight at the MLB Urban Youth Academy. Martin’s grand slam, the big hit in the Barons’ six-run fifth inning, came with two outs in the inning and followed an RBI-double by Solomon Bates (USC), who had a game-high four hits, and an RBI-single by Jonah Dean-Hargroves (Jackson St). Martin’s two-run double in the second inning, following a run scoring single by Eric Whitfield, gave the Barons a 3-2 lead after the Oaks had scored twice in the top of the frame on a two-run triple by DJ Miller (Ole Miss). Miller drove in a total of three runs while matching Bates’ game-high total with four hits of his own (two singles, the triple and an RBI-double in the eighth inning) to lead the Oaks and improve his league third-best average to an even .500.

San Luis Obispo, CA
Dayton Provost (Canyons JC)
hit three run-scoring singles and a double and Dylan Francis (Cal Poly Pomona) had nine strikeouts in six innings of work to lead the Ventura Halos to a 9-6 win over the San Luis Obispo Blues tonight at Sinsheimer Park. Provost upped his league batting average to .551 with his four-hit performance, swapping places at the top of the leaders’ board with the Blues’ Price Visintainer (Ala-Birmingham), whose two hits in four at bats tonight, including a first inning solo home run, actually made his average dip to .526. Aside from the bragging rights of being the league’s best hitter and the early 1-0 San Luis Obispo lead, Ventura scored four runs on five singles and a sacrifice fly in the second inning to take command of the game while Francis kept the Blues at bay. Francis retired 14 of the first 15 hitters he faced, Visintainer being the exception, before allowing consecutive singles in the fifth inning with two outs, but avoided giving up any runs by punching out the next hitter. He was tagged for a run in the sixth inning, however, giving up a leadoff double to Tyson Quolas (Monterey Bay) and an RBI-single by Nkosi Djehuti-Mes (Corpus Christi), but by then the game was well in hand. Ventura added their fifth run in the third inning on an RBI-double by Joey Mendez (Fresno St), an insurance run in the seventh on a Provost single, and three more in the eighth on three consecutive two-out RBI-singles by Chris McKee (Ventura JC), Provost and Calvin Farris (Brown).

Santa Barbara, CA
The Santa Barbara Foresters spoiled a great outing by Southern California Catch starting pitcher Zac Whittaker (Fresno CC) by scoring two runs with one out in the bottom of the ninth to post a 4-3 walk-off win tonight at Pershing Park. Whittaker pitched eight strong innings, allowing only two runs, both unearned, on only two hits while striking out five with only one walk. He was relieved in the ninth by Matthew Wade (SE Missouri St) who immediately met trouble. Ryan Reynolds (Texas) hit a single, his second hit of the game, to lead off the inning and David Hamilton (Texas) was brought in as a pinch-runner. A wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt later, Hamilton was at third base when David Clawson (BYU) singled him home to tie the score at 3-3. Joey Fiske (St. Mary’s) was then brought in to run for Clawson, stole second base and scored on a single by Ashton Easley (Air Force) with the game winner. Evan Kravetz (Rice) picked up the win in relief for Santa Barbara, finishing the last two innings for starter Jake McDonald (Texas Tech) who went five, allowing two runs on RBI-singles by Mitchell Bumann (Hawaii-Pacific) and Nate Pecota (William Jewell) in the fifth inning.
