June 14, 2019 Pasadena, CA Michael Peabody (UC Irvine) singled, doubled and tripled and scored each time, Daniel Jung (Notre Dame) hit a two-run home run, and Carson Matthews (BYU) singled twice and scored twice to lead the Orange County Riptide to a 7-5 win over the Arroyo Seco Saints tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The trio of Riptide hitters accounted for all of the Riptide's runs scored in tonight's game and seven of the team's hits. Jung started the offensive production for Orange County by singling to lead off the second inning and eventually scored with two outs on a wild pitch to give the Riptide a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last very long as the Saints rallied for four runs in their half of the inning after a single and two walks loaded the bases with two outs and David Reyna (Ark-Monticello) hit a grand slam to put Arroyo Seco ahead. Jung produced runs for the Riptide again in the third inning, hitting a two-run home run to drive in Peabody, who had doubled, to make the score 4-3. Ricky Reynoso (Pacific), who was the starting pitcher for Orange County, and Sean Higgins (Columbia), the first reliever in, held the Saints in check, retiring eight batters in a row after Christian Scott (Tennessee), who finished the game with three hits, tripled after Reyna's slam and until the Riptide hitters took the lead in the fifth inning. Matthews started things for the Riptide in the fifth by leading off with a single, stealing second base and scoring to tie the game on Peabody's RBI-single. Peabody then also stole second base, advanced to third on an overthrow and scored the go-ahead run on an run producing groundout. The Saints then tied the game again in their half of the ninth when Nolan Tressler (Georgia Southern) singled to lead off the inning and scored from first on an Andy Garriola (Old Dominion) double. Matthews and Peabody repeated their run production in the seventh inning when Matthews again led off with a single and stole second base. This time, however, Peabody tripled Matthews in with what would prove to be the winning run, then scored an insurance run himself when Jung drove him home with a sacrifice fly for Jung's game-high third RBI. Andre Antone (UC Irvine), Cole Samuels (St Louis) and Wesley Scott (Vanderbilt) made that two-run lead stick by each retiring the side in order for one inning to close out the win for Michael Defelippi (Pacific) who relieved Higgins with one out in the fifth inning and was the pitcher of record when Peabody's triple put the Riptide in front for good. Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere around the CCL tonight: Santa Barbara, CA Four Santa Barbara pitchers combined to throw a three-hit, one-run game, Ross Cadena (Wichita State) hit a solo home run and Conor McKenna (Oklahoma) singled, stole third base and scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch as the Santa Barbara Foresters did just enough to beat the Conejo Oaks 2-1 tonight at Pershing Park. The four pitchers for the Foresters were the decisive factor in the win tonight as the Santa Barbara offense, despite collecting ten hits and stealing seven bases, couldn't get runners to score. Garrett Clarke (College of Southern Nevada) started on the mound for Santa Barbara and struck out three in five innings of work while allowing only two hits. Both hits Clarke allowed came in the second inning when Ryne Yamashiro (Cal Lutheran) doubled to lead off the inning and a one out single by Ramon Gomez (Oklahoma Baptist) put runners on the corners. Yamashiro scored on an RBI-groundout to give the Oaks a 1-0 lead but Clarke struck out the last batter of the inning to avoid further damage. The Foresters tied the game immediately thereafter when Cadena hit his home run to lead off the bottom of the second inning and Clarke and the Foresters relievers held Conejo in check until the offense could muster another run. Drake Greenwood (Rice) was the first Santa Barbara reliever in, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings, and was the pitcher of record when the Foresters offense, having gotten runners in scoring in every inning, finally pushed one across in the bottom of the seventh when McKenna got his second hit of the game. Nico O'Donnell (Texas) pitched around a one-out single to pitch a scoreless eighth inning and Connor Woods (UNLV) retired the side in order in the ninth to close out the Santa Barbara win. Jacob Katzfey (Wichita State) had a pair of singles to join Cadena and McKenna as the only hitters with a multiple-hit game. Eric Ma (Whitman College) started on the mound for Conejo and pitched four and a third innings with a strikeout and one run allowed on six hits before turning the pitching duties over to Matthew Strother (UC Santa Barbara) and Carson Carter (Texas Tech) who allowed two hits each and one run which saddled Strother with the loss. Click here for recaps of this game Lincoln, CA Sonny Brandwood and Peyton Baker (Alabama A&M) struck out five batters each, Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) hit a two-run home run, and Matt Mollahan (Chapman) drove in three runs on a pair of singles to lead the San Francisco Seals to a 9-5 win over the Lincoln Potters tonight at McBean Stadium. Brandwood started on the mound for the Seals and pitched five innings, recording one strikeout in each inning, and was given a comfortable lead before he even took the mound as Climo's home run drove in Eric Callahan (Millersville), who had led off the game with a single, and a single and an error put a runner in scoring position for Mollahan to drive in his first run of the game and give Brandwood and the Seals a 3-0 lead. They would need those runs because the Potters answered right back in the bottom of the first inning by scoring two runs via a hit batsman, a single, an RBI-single by Jake Plecas (Utah Valley) and a passed ball made the score 3-2. Brandwood settled in and pitched around singles in the next three innings and two walks in the fifth inning to not allow another run, while the Seals offense rallied for two runs in the third inning and four more in the fourth. Joe Morin's double and a single by Drew Lowe (Oral Roberts) produced the two third inning runs, while a single, two hit batters, an error, a walk and Mollahan's bases loaded single generated the four in the fourth before an out was recorded. Radd Thomas, who entered the game for Lincoln with the bases loaded and no outs in the fourth and surrendered Mollahan's hit, retired the next three batters he faced by way of strikeouts to escape further damage, and then pitched three scoreless and hitless innings before turning the pitching duties over to Tyler Mead who finished with two scoreless innings himself. Baker, who relieved Brandwood to start the sixth inning, struck out the first batter he faced in the sixth and seventh innings, the first two batters of the ninth, but was tagged for three runs on three hits and two walks in the eighth to account for the final 9-5 score.
