June 12, 2019 Irvine, CA Devin Sutorius (Biola) pitched six and one-third innings of one-run baseball and Dylan Rock (UTSA) hit a two-run single and scored the third run to lead the Orange County Riptide to a 3-2 win over the Santa Barbara Foresters tonight at Great Park Stadium. Sutorius struck out six in his start and pitched with runners on base throughout, surrendering four of the six hits he allowed to the leadoff batter of an inning. In the first inning, he used a pair of strikeouts to neutralize the bunt single Eric Kennedy (Texas) used to lead off the game. In the second he induced a double play to erase the leadoff single by Jacob Katzfey (Wichita State) and, in the sixth inning, he used a strikeout and a flyball out to strand Kennedy at third who had hit a leadoff double. Only in the fourth inning was Sutorius scored upon when allowing a leadoff hitter to reach. This time, three Foresters hit consecutive singles to start the sixth, but Sutorius escaped with only one run allowed, via Katzfey's RBI-hit, by two of the three runners being erased off the bases trying to steal. Sutorius struck out the first batter he faced in the seventh but, after he walked the next batter, he turned the pitching duties over to Andrew Beauvais (Pittsburgh) who stranded two runners to keep the inning scoreless, and then to Marrick Crouse who pitched around another leadoff single by Kennedy, his game-high third hit, in the eighth and around two errors in the ninth to close out the Riptide win. Jake Jackson (Nevada) started on the mound for Santa Barbara and pitched five scoreless innings, allowing only one hit while striking out five, and left the game leading 1-0. Orange County greeted the first Foresters reliever with three runs in the sixth inning on four singles, including Rock's two-run hit and a two-out RBI-single by Chad Crosbie (Miami). Click here for recaps of this game Elsewhere around the CCL tonight: Compton, CA Gabe Baldovino (Ventura JC) hit a two-run triple, Niko Lima (Oxnard JC) had three hits, and Jacob Flores (San Diego St) retired the first nine hitters of the game in order to lead the Conejo Oaks to a 9-6 win over the Academy Barons tonight at the MLB Youth Academy. Leading 1-0 after Tyler Odekirk (Cal St LA) hit a two-out single and scored on Lima's first hit in the third inning, the Oaks scored three times in the fourth when Steele Ledford (UC Santa Barbara) singled, Ramon Gomez (Oklahoma Baptist) doubled and Baldovino hit his triple and scored on a passed ball. Flores' streak of consecutive batters retired ended in the fourth inning when the Barons walked three times and singled once to chase the Oaks starter with the bases loaded and one out but still leading 4-1. Logan Pollack (Michigan) drove in another run in the fourth inning and Basiel Williams Jr. (Jones JC) hit a two-out, two-run single in the fifth to tie the score 4-4. Both teams then went quietly in the sixth inning but in the seventh the Oaks scored two runs when Odekirk led off with a double, Lima got his second hit and Jacob Castro (UC Irvine) hit an RBI-single and the Barons scored once when Jaylen Heard (Heartland) doubled and scored later on a groundball out to make the score 6-5. Likewise, both teams were retired in order in the next inning and, in the ninth, the Oaks put the game away by scoring three runs on three singles and an error, while the Academy could only muster one run on a pair of doubles by Pollack and Matthew Elizalde (Loyola), who matched Lima with a game-high three hits. Click here for recaps of this game Pasadena, CA Eli Riechmann struck out seven batters in four innings of relief pitching, Nickolas Pagan (Hartford) hit a bases loaded three-run double and Jacob Wyeth (Cisco JC) singled, doubled and scored twice to lead the Arroyo Seco Saints to a 6-3 win over the San Luis Obispo Blues tonight at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Riechamann entered the game to start the fourth inning in relief of Saints starter Drew Atherton (Cal Poly Pomona), who allowed two hits in three scoreless innings while striking out two, and Riechmann used the strikeout to strand two runners in the fourth inning, two strikeouts to end the fifth, one strikeout to start the sixth and struck out the side in the seventh. The only blemish to Riechmann's outing was the solo home run he surrendered to Duke Pahukoa (UNLV) in the sixth inning that tied the score 1-1. Having scored once in the fifth inning when Wyeth led off with a single and scored on an error, the Saints scored four times in the sixth when the first five batters of the inning recorded hits, including Wyeth's RBI-single and Pagan's bases-clearing double to make the score 5-1. San Luis added one run in the eighth inning on an RBI-single by Hunter Swift (Oral Roberts), which the Saints answered in their half of the inning on a run scoring single by Thomas Luevano (USD), and the Blues added one more in the ninth when Ryan Cole (Notre Dame) hit a leadoff single and scored on an RBI-groundout to post the final score. Pierson Ohl (Grand Canyon) started on the mound for the Blues, pitching three scoreless innings while allowing only one hit and striking out three, but did not figure in the decision. Mitchell Scott (Cal), who relieved Ohl to start the fourth inning, also struck out three in his two-inning stint.
