San Luis Obispo, CA
Jack Schneider (Grand Canyon)
pitched a complete game shutout and the San Luis Obispo Blues scored two runs without the benefit of a hit and a third on an error to beat the Ventura Halos 3-0 tonight at Sinsheimer Park to keep their hopes of reaching the CCL playoffs alive. Schneider, who notched six strikeouts and scattered six hits, used 101 pitches to complete the game, right on the mark of the Pitch Smart limits established by USA baseball to govern summer competition, benefitting from two double-plays turned by his defense and runner a thrown out trying to steal second base. The Blues offense manufactured one run in the first inning when leadoff hitter Ricky Martinez (Sacramento St) reached base after being hit by a pitch, stole second base, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Ramos (Cumberlands). They manufactured a run in the second inning when Marco Murillo (Campbellsville) drew a lead-off walk, stole second base, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on an RBI-ground out by Tate Samuelson (Cal Poly). Martinez then scored again in the sixth inning after hitting a lead-off double and, one out later, scoring on an two-base throwing error to post the final score. The win moves the Blues to within one half game of the Conejo Oaks in the race for the final berth to the CCL playoffs beginning Friday at the MLB Youth Academy in Compton. The Oaks travel to Sinsheimer Park tomorrow night for a final meeting between the two teams. If the Oaks win, they clinch a berth to the playoffs. If the Blues win, they will still have to win their game Thursday night against the Arroyo Seco Saints in Pasadena to clinch a playoff berth.

hit a pair of two-run home runs to lead the Southern California Catch to a 5-1 win over the Academy Barons today at the MLB Youth Academy. The third and fourth home runs in league play this summer, Ortiz hit his first homer today in the second inning, driving in Steven Garrett (Azusa Pacific) who had hit a leadoff double, to post an early 2-0 lead. In other words, Henley was throwing a perfect game until one out in the sixth inning when Ricky Martinez (Sacramento St) hit a triple. Henley then fielded a ground ball for the second out, left Martinez stranded at third with a strikeout, and retired the Blues in order in the seventh inning before turning the pitching duties over to Smith and Follett who completed the shutout with one inning each. The Foresters scored the only run they would need in the third inning when David Hamilton (Texas) hit a leadoff double and scored later on a wild pitch. Santa Barbara, CA
Ricky Reynoso (Pacific), Parker Joe Robinson (Texas) and Will Tomlinson (Brown)
combined to throw a two-hitter, Jake Pulcheon (Houston Baptist) and Paul Gomez each got a two-out RBI and the only triple-play in the league this summer helped the Orange County Riptide beat the Santa Barbara Foresters 3-2 today at Pershing Park. The Orange County trio of pitchers, who struck out ten while walking three, allowed two runs in innings in which they did not allow a hit. Reynoso, who started and struck out five in six innings, allowed one run in the first inning by giving up a walk to leadoff hitter Austin Todd (Texas) who then stole two bases and scored on an RBI-ground out, and Tomlinson, who pitched the final inning to pick up the save, hit the leadoff batter he faced, balked him to second, wild pitched him to third and gave up a sacrifice fly for the second Santa Barbara run. Of the two hits the Foresters did get, Reynoso stranded the first in the fourth inning and Santa Barbara ran one off the bases in the sixth when Todd led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt with no out recorded and, when Josh Jung (Texas Tech), who had both RBI in the game for the Foresters, grounded into a double-play, Todd tried to score from second but was thrown out at the plate for a triple play. Joey Parente led off the game with a single and scored to give the Riptide a 1-0 lead when Pulcheon drove him in with a two-out single. The Riptide took the lead in the second when Gomez, again with two outs, doubled home Tate Shaw (Texas) from first and added an unearned run in the seventh when Shaw, who finished with a game-high three hits, singled, stole a base and scored on an error. Hunter Allen (Alabama State) had an RBI-single, Donovyn Curiel (Citrus JC) drove in two with a single and an RBI-ground out, and Bruce Martin (Stetson) hit a double, a single and scored twice to lead the Barons. Devan Peterson (Harvard) hit a solo home run in the third inning and Dayton Provost (Ventura JC) doubled to lead off the ninth to account for the only Ventura hits. Aside from the home run by Peterson, only one other batter reached base on Albert, via a fielding error, and, in total, he retired 15 of 17 batters faced. Mercado, who gave up two walks as well as Provost’s double, retired 12 of 15.

Shay Whitcomb (UC San Diego) hit a two-run home run and an RBI-double, Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist), Anthony Seminaris (Arkansas-Ft Smith) and Mitchell Bumann (Hawaii-Pacific) each hit RBI-doubles, and Grant Robbins (UNLV) and Jonathan Ducoff (Houston Baptist) had four hits each to lead the Southern California Catch to a 17-hit, 13-6 win over the Arroyo Seco Saints today at Biola University. The win came on the heels of the completion of a suspended game from June 14 between the same two teams that ended with an almost identical score but with the teams reversed, Arroyo Seco winning 13-5. The split result of the two games today reduced the elimination number for the Saints to just one. One win by the Orange County Riptide or the Neptune Beach Pearl, or one loss by the Saints eliminates Arroyo Seco from playoff contention.

Alameda, CA
Chase Gardner (UCONN)
and Nolan Bond (Houston) combined to throw either a no-hitter or a one-hit shutout, depends on who you ask, as the Healdsburg Prune Packers beat the Neptune Beach Pearl 5-0 in the second game of a doubleheader the two teams split today at the College of Alameda. Officially, Gardner and Bond will be credited for a one-hitter, as the home team report of the game awarded an infield hit to pinch-hitter Tim Lichty (Texas A&M) in the bottom of the seventh inning when the groundball he hit was just out of the reach of first baseman Cameron Warren (Texas Tech) who got his glove on the ball but couldn’t reel it in to make a play. The visiting team report of the game ruled the play an error on Warren but the home team report has the final say. Either way, it was a remarkable performance by Gardner and Bond. Gardner struck out twelve batters in five innings, walking four, before handing the ball to Bond, who besides allowing the one hit, walked one batter, hit one batter and retired everyone else, including five on strikeouts, over the last four innings. Jamey Smart (LMU) hit two home runs in the nightcap, a solo shot in the sixth inning and a two-run homer in the ninth to lead Healdsburg offensively.

Neptune overcame an early 4-0 deficit in the first game of the doubleheader, scoring four times in the fourth inning, three on a home run by James Free II (Pacific), to tie the score, and five times in the fifth to take the lead and go on to win 11-7. Free, who followed his home run with an RBI-single in his next at bat, finished with a game-high four RBI, and Andrew Rosa (Oklahoma St), who had three RBI on two singles, were the leaders offensively for the Pearl. Grant Little (Texas Tech) doubled and singled twice, driving in two, and Cole Brodnansky (Santa Rosa JC) hit three singles to lead Healdsburg.

With the doubleheader split, each team inches closer to clinching a spot in the CCL playoffs a week from Friday in Los Angeles and each continues to battle with the other for the top spot in the CCL standings. The magic number for Healdsburg, who now has a one game lead on Neptune in the CCL standings, is one: One more win and they are assured at least a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Neptune’s magic number is two.

Auburn, CA
The Auburn Wildcats scored three runs in their last at bat on two singles and four walks to overcome a 3-2 deficit and beat the Neptune Beach Pearl 5-3 tonight at James Field. Taylor Field (Winona St) tied the score with a single after the first two batters of the eighth inning reached on walks and, after another single by Gaige Howard (Kenyon College) loaded the bases, two consecutive two-walks to Sam Curtis (William Jessup) and Dylan McPhillips (Sacramento St) gave Auburn its winning margin. Brock Ragatz (Northern St), who gave up one run in the eighth inning when Harrison Moore, who reached after being hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Jacob Chappell (Oklahoma St) and scored on a sacrifice fly by Cooper Morrison (Reedley JC), pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the win in relief of Hayden Josephson (American River), who went seven innings, striking out four. Field’s RBI-ground out in the fourth inning and McPhillip’s RBI-double in the seventh accounted for Auburn’s first two runs, while Lucas Halstead (Pacific) scored one with a double in the third to give Neptune an early 1-0 lead, and an unearned run in the fourth accounted for the Pearl’s first two. Neptune’s Zach Miller (West Virginia) finished with a game-high three hits.

Then, in the bottom of the eighth and ninety feet at a time, the Saints took the lead back. Brandon Shearer (LMU) singled to lead off the inning, advanced to second on a single by Josh Magee (Faulkner), advanced to third on a walk to Corey Harrell (Graceland) and scored what proved to be the winning run on a single by Alex Briggs (LIU Brooklyn). Sticking to the station-to-station offense, Arroyo Seco scored three times more on a single by Mitch Kerner (Emory), a walk to Gabe Chavez (Rio Hondo JC) and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Durna (UC San Diego). Before Ritter’s home run had tied the game, Blake Burton (Washington) had driven in three runs with a pair of singles in the fourth and sixth innings, and Harrell drove in Burton with the Saints third run in the sixth. Jung, who had three hits in the game (a double and two singles), drove in the other two Santa Barbara runs with a two-run single in the third inning to give the Foresters an early 2-0. The win snapped the Foresters seven-game winning streak and extended Arroyo Seco’s chances of reach the CCL playoffs for another game.

Jordan Dosey (Virginia), Caleb Kilian (Texas Tech)
and Braxton Smith (Louisiana Tech) each pitched three innings scoreless, Mitch Andrews (Lamar) drove in the first run of the game with a bases-loaded single in the sixth inning and, one out later, Paul Gomez cleared the bases with a three-run double to lead the Orange County Riptide to a 4-0 win over the Academy Barons today at Concordia University. Witt led all pitchers with six strikeouts in five innings, but allowed the Riptide’s first two runs and suffered the loss. Kilian, who led Orange County with five strikeouts in his three innings of relief of starter Dosey, picked up the win. Andrews and the Barons’ Randy Rubio (Marymount), with two singles each, were the only batters in the game with multiple hits. Healdsburg, CA
Landon Etzel (Houston) had a pinch-hit three-run home run, and Bryce Nagata (Sonoma St) and Clay Koelzer (Texas Tech) each had RBI-doubles to lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers to a 9-3 win over the Neptune Beach Pearl today at Recreation Park. The win flip-flopped the position of the two teams atop the CCL standings, a common occurrence this past week, with Healdsburg now holding a half-game lead. Etzel’s home run, which came in the eighth inning with two outs, while notable, was only an exclamation to the Packers win. It was Koelzer’s double in the fifth inning, which came with the bases loaded, two outs and the score 3-2, was the big hit in the game. Keolzer’s double, especially notable because Neptune’s pitcher Andrew Davis (Texas Tech) had struck out the previous two batters when Healdsburg loaded the bases with no outs, plated two runs and was followed by an RBI-single by Sawyer Pittman (San Jose St) to make the score 6-2. Previous to that turning point, the two teams had been trading single runs with Neptune scoring one in the first inning when Harrison Moore doubled and scored on a two-out single by Andrew Rosa (Oklahoma St); Healdsburg scoring in the bottom half of the inning when Nagata led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a single by Jamey Smart (LMU). Healdsburg evened the score again in the third inning after Neptune scored an unearned run in the second when Cameron Warren (Texas Tech), who had four hits in the game and took over the league’s top spot in average for the first time this season with a .458 mark, drove in Nagata who had walked, and then took the lead in the fourth when Nagata drove in Bret Bautista (San Jose St) with a two-out double. Cooper Casad (Pacific) started on the mound for the Packers, scattering eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks to only allow two runs over five innings to earn the win. Davis, who struck out six in six innings, suffered the loss.

Shay Whitcomb (UC San Diego)
hit a two-out three-run home run, Mitchel Bumann (Hawaii-Pacific) and Tyler Fisher (Olivet Nazarene) each had doubles to score a crucial run in the eleventh inning, and Evan Sandmann (Dallas Baptist) drove in Grant Robbins (UNLV) with what would be the game-winning run in the twelfth to lead the Southern California Catch to a 7-6 win over the Orange County Riptide today at Concordia University. The win snapped the Riptide’s eight-game winning streak and also snapped the Catch’s losing streak to the Riptide. It was the first win for the Catch in the six meetings the two teams will have this summer. Whitcomb’s homer in the fifth inning, which followed a run-scoring single by Tobias Johnson (Arkansas St), gave the Catch a 4-1 lead that would not last. Jake Pulcheon (Houston Baptist), who scored the opening run of the game after leading off the second inning with a single, and Logan Pouelsen (Hawaii) went double-double to lead off the sixth to make the score 4-2, and Pouelsen produced another run in seventh by drawing a bases-loaded walk followed by an RBI-ground out Chase Sebby to tie it 4-4. The Catch took the lead again in the seventh inning when Robbins drove in Nate Pecota (William Jewell) who had singled, only to have Orange County tie the score again in their half of the inning on a sacrifice fly by Dominic Fletcher (Arkansas). That pattern repeated in the eleventh inning when Bumann and Fisher gave the Catch a one-run lead, only to have Pouelsen tie it with a solo home run, but it didn’t repeat in the twelfth after Sandmann’s RBI. Conner Davis (Creighton), who entered the game to pitch for the Catch after Pouelsen’s home run, retired the last five batters in order to pick up the win.

After both teams had scored twice in their half of the first inning, Justin Beck (San Jose St) gave the Blues a brief 4-2 lead in the fourth by driving in two with a one-out single. Wesley Albert (Lee), who came in to pitch in fifth inning in relief of starter Matt Mogollon (Chapman), held San Luis Obispo scoreless for three innings, striking out four to pick up the win. Blake Mann (UCSB) doubled and scored the Halos only run in the seventh inning on a run-scoring single by Rudy Aguilar (Ventura JC). Brandon Lewis (LA Pierce JC) doubled home Max Weinstein (Cal Lutheran) in the eighth inning with the Oaks’ final run. Provost, whose two hits today raised his average in league play to .455, fell out of the top spot in that category for the first time in weeks, and now trails Healdsburg’s Cameron Warren (Texas Tech), whose four hits today raised his average to .458.

hit a pair of two-run home runs, and Sawyer Pittman (San Jose St) hit one of his own to lead the Healdsburg Prune Packers to a 10-1 win over the Auburn Wildcats in the first game of a doubleheader between the two teams today at Recreation Park. Warren’s two homers, his sixth and seventh of the summer in league play, tying him for the league lead in that category, were both two-out hits that give him 31 RBI for the summer, one behind teammate Jamey Smart (LMU), who drove in two with a single in the second inning and leads the CCL with 32 RBI, pending the results of the second half of the doubleheader today. Cole Brodnansky (Santa Rosa JC) hit a double and three singles to finish with a game-high four hits while Pittman had two singles before his two-run blast to finish with three. The Long Beach Legends chased from the game the starting pitcher of the Arroyo Seco Saints before their first at bat was over, scoring five runs on RBI-doubles by Trevor Steinman (Chico St), Zack Chan (Hawaii) and Jake Scott (Houston Baptist), but the Saints doubled that and chased the Legends starting pitcher in two innings, scoring ten times on nine hits as Arroyo Seco overcame the early deficit to beat Long Beach 14-8 today at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The Saints pounded the ball in those first two innings today.
